Parent Perspective™
Few moments in hockey carry as much influence as the ride home.
Not the game.

Not the practice.
Not the tournament.
The ride home.
It happens thousands of times every day across North America.
Parents and players leave the arena.
The equipment is loaded.
The doors close.
The car pulls away.
And suddenly, the game is over.
But often, the most important part of the day is just beginning.
For many young players, the ride home becomes the moment they remember most.
Not because of the score.
Not because of the standings.
Because of the conversation.
Or sometimes the silence.
Parents rarely realize how much influence they have during these moments.
They want to help.
They want to teach.
They want to encourage.
They want their child to improve.
Those are good intentions.
The challenge is that young players are often processing the game differently than adults.
They already know when they played poorly.
They already know when they made mistakes.
They already know when they missed an opportunity.
Many players begin analyzing their performance before they even remove their skates.
When parents immediately begin reviewing mistakes, players often hear something different than what was intended.
Instead of hearing support, they hear disappointment.
Instead of hearing guidance, they hear criticism.
Instead of hearing encouragement, they hear pressure.
That doesn’t mean parents should never talk about hockey.
It means timing matters.
Perspective matters.
And emotions matter.
Many experienced coaches will tell parents something simple.
The ride home is not always the time for coaching.
Sometimes it is the time for listening.
Sometimes it is the time for asking questions.
Sometimes it is the time for saying nothing at all.
Every player is different.
Some want to talk immediately.
Some need time.
Some want feedback.
Some need space.
The best parents learn to recognize the difference.
Years later, former players rarely remember specific coaching instructions from the car.
But they remember how they felt.
Did they feel supported?
Did they feel safe?
Did they feel accepted regardless of performance?
Did they know their parents loved them whether they scored three goals or none?
Those feelings become part of the hockey experience.
One of the greatest gifts a parent can give a player is separating hockey performance from personal worth.
A bad game does not make someone a bad player.
A bad season does not make someone a failure.
A missed opportunity does not define a future.
Young athletes need people who remind them of that.
Parents often become those people.
The ride home can become a place where confidence is rebuilt.
A place where perspective is restored.
A place where lessons are learned.
A place where relationships grow stronger.
Or it can become a place players dread.
The choice often comes down to a few words.
Or knowing when not to use any words at all.
Many hockey families eventually discover something important.
The greatest value of youth sports is not found in championships.
It is found in relationships.
And every ride home is an opportunity to strengthen one of the most important relationships a player will ever have.
Because years from now, players may forget the score.
They may forget the standings.
They may forget the tournament.
But they will remember the ride home.
And they will remember how it made them feel.
