Ontario – May 23 – The Mern Coveny Memorial Hockey Tournament – Adult Hockey Tournament – Halton

An annual Hockey Tournament to support girls and women in Hockey, in memory of Mern Coveny, Canada’s first captain, a world champion, a national champion, and an Ontario university champion.

“No one promoted the game and wanted the sport to move forward and put the time and energy into it as she did. She was a driving force.”

 Jackie Hughes, Manager of the Hamilton Golden Hawks

Over the last 15 years, Canadian women’s Hockey has made tremendous strides on the competitive international stage – winning five gold medals and three world championships. However, the journey for many players has not been easy. Women’s competitive Hockey at all levels continues to lack adequate funding.

In every sport, there is a prominent figure, a driving force that pushes the sport forward. For Women’s Hockey, that was Marian “Mern” Coveny – Canada’s first Captain of our national women’s Hockey Team. She was a star of women’s Hockey long before it became an Olympic event.

Sadly, Mern passed away in 2022, and in her honor, we host an annual one-day Hockey Tournament, with proceeds from the event directed to children who need financial assistance with sport registration fees and equipment costs.

Mern put her heart and soul into Hockey. Supporting children and promoting sport participation is something we know Mern would have wanted.

Adult Safe Hockey League (ASHL) rules shall apply except as listed below.

Players must be registered as members of your Team to be eligible for this Tournament. Under no circumstances can you pick up a Player to replace a Player under suspension or a Player who is missing.

If a Goalie is injured or missing, you may pick up another Goalie of the same caliber, but it must be approved by the organizers before the start of the game.

All players must read and sign a waiver upon arrival to play. Any Player on the ice who has not signed the waiver will be removed from the game.

Teams must be available to play fifteen (15) minutes before their scheduled game time; there will be a 2-minute warm-up only.

All games will consist of three (3) periods, twelve-ten-ten (12,10,10) stop time.

At no time will a Team be more than 5 goals ahead in the score (5+ rule). If the goal differential is more than 5, we will operate on runtime until the goal differential returns to 5 or less. The clock may be stopped at the Referee’s discretion for injury or for intentional delay of the game.

Intent to injure and fighting penalties will result in the Player being expelled from the game and the remainder of the Tournament.

Slap shots are allowed at all levels.

Round-robin games are allowed to end in a tie. Determination of final game placement in case of a tie in points standing will be decided as follows:

Goals for – goals against = goal differential

Fewest penalties in minutes (PIM)

Winner of the head-to-head game

If the final game is tied, it will be decided with a 5-minute overtime period. If still tied, the tie will be broken by a shootout: each Team will designate 3 shooters on the game sheet, and the order in which they will shoot will be determined prior to the game. Shooters from each Team will shoot simultaneously. After 3 shooters, the Team with the most goals wins. If the teams are still tied after shooters, the shootout will continue in sudden-victory style until one Team wins. No shooter can go twice until every Player has shot once.

One 30-second time-out will be permitted for each Team in the final game only.

Decisions made by the organizer’s officials are final.

Due to insurance regulations, players and spectators are never allowed on the ice without a helmet.

All players must wear at least a full visor or full plexi only

Points will be awarded for each round-robin game as follows:

Win = 2 points

Tie = 1 point

Loss = 0

A default win shall be scored 5-0 for the non-defaulting winning Team.

***The organizer has the right to update current rules up until the day before the Tournament.
