6 – PRESIDENT MARK™ | ALL AGES | NHL Lessons: Offside, Support and Puck Entries

NHL PERSPECTIVE

NHL PROS MAKE MISTAKES TOO!™ One subject, one research-informed teaching discussion, guidance for every minor Hockey age group.

An offside or poor entry is a teaching opportunity about awareness, timing and working together, not a reason to embarrass a young Player.

The Hockey leadership question

What should a Coach say after this happens in a game, and how can the lesson fit a young Player’s stage of development?

U5–U7: Age-appropriate discussion

Offer one easy cue: look for teammates and be ready.

U8–U10: Age-appropriate discussion

Practice slowing down and waiting when a teammate needs time.

U11–U14: Age-appropriate discussion

Discuss timing and safe support options for the puck carrier.

U15–U18: Age-appropriate discussion

Study spacing, speed variation and shared cues before entering the zone.

For Coaches and Parents

Coach: explain one controllable action in calm language and give the Player a chance to try it. Parent: support enjoyment and learning rather than judging the child by a single NHL comparison or game result.

The Hockey Resource Answer™

Use elite Hockey as perspective, not as an expectation that children should play like professionals. A useful correction is specific, positive, and suitable for the Player’s age and experience.

Editorial review note: Consolidated from THTR source drafts 50874, 50876, 50877, 50878, 50899. Before publication, verify the original NHL examples and citations, add suitable verified references, and review any overlapping content. This is an unpublished consolidation draft.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

We commit to providing thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
