8 – HOCKEY MOM YVONNE™ — ALL AGES —Your Child Had a Bad Game. What Do You Say?

PRESIDENT MARK

DON’T TURN THE CAR RIDE INTO VIDEO REVIEW.™ A bad hockey game can follow a Player all the way into the parking lot. However, Hockey Mom Yvonne™ starts with one idea: your child usually knows when the game went badly. The first job is not to prove that you noticed too.

U5-U7 + U8-U10 — Bad Hockey Game: Keep It Simple

Start with connection, not analysis. Food, warmth, and a calm ride home may be more useful than a breakdown of the third-period turnover.

U15-U18 + Junior — Separate Support From Evaluation

Older Players may need honest performance conversations, but the parent does not have to become the Coach. Listen first, then discuss decisions, preparation, or next steps when the Player is ready.

The Game Is Already Over

Parents often replay the game because they are trying to help. Unfortunately, immediate analysis can feel like a second loss. Give the Player time to come down from the emotional and physical intensity of competition.

Ask Before You Analyze

A simple invitation to talk respects the Player’s ownership of the experience. If they want to discuss the game, listen before offering solutions. If they do not, the lesson can wait.

Performance Still Matters

Support does not require pretending the game was excellent. There is a time for honest discussion about effort, preparation, decisions, and habits. The question is whether the conversation is helping development or simply extending frustration.

Hockey Mom Yvonne’s Takeaway

Your child probably remembers the bad shift. Make sure they also remember who was beside them afterward. DON’T TURN THE CAR RIDE INTO VIDEO REVIEW.™

Bad Hockey Game: What Parents Should Remember

A bad hockey game is part of development, not a family emergency. First, give the Player room to reset. Then, when they are ready, discuss effort, preparation, and the next opportunity instead of replaying every mistake from the bad hockey game.

For another parent decision, read what to do when your child says the Coach does not like them. Hockey Canada also provides official resources for Hockey parents.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
