REAL CURRENT QUESTIONS – REAL CURRENT RESEARCH – REAL CURRENT ANSWERS.™
Should a young Hockey Player choose a higher competitive level with fewer opportunities to play, or a lower level with more meaningful ice time? Neither the higher label nor the most minutes guarantees better development.
THE HOCKEY RESOURCE ANSWER™
Choose the environment where the Player can learn, participate meaningfully, build confidence and enjoy Hockey. Consider Coaching quality, age, practice environment, actual role and the Player’s goals.
WHY ICE TIME MATTERS
Playing provides opportunities to handle the puck, make decisions, learn from mistakes and develop confidence. A Player who rarely participates misses many of these opportunities. But ice time is not the only measure: instruction, practices and appropriate competition also matter.
WHY HIGHER-LEVEL HOCKEY CAN HELP
Strong opponents can challenge skating, puck decisions and awareness. Higher-level Teams may offer excellent Coaching and practice environments, but a AAA or AA label alone does not prove Coaching quality. Ask who teaches the Player and what role is realistically available.
THE ANSWER BY AGE
U5–U7: PARTICIPATION AND FUN
Choose a welcoming environment with skating, movement, puck touches and enjoyment. Competitive status should not dominate the decision.
U8–U10: MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN
Prioritize regular involvement and age-appropriate Coaching. Children need chances to make decisions, try skills and learn without fear of every mistake.
U11–U14: BALANCE CHALLENGE AND CONFIDENCE
Compare practice quality, Coaching, expected shifts, the child’s confidence and enjoyment. Physical maturity differs widely, and current performance does not predict the finished Player.
U15–U18: EVALUATE THE REAL ROLE
Higher competition may support ambitious Players when they receive meaningful shifts and a clear development plan. Ask whether the Player can learn at that pace and earn opportunities to apply their skills.
JUNIOR: DEVELOPMENT AND PATHWAYS
Compare ice time, special-teams opportunities, Coaching, Team role and future options. Being on a higher-level roster with little playing opportunity is not automatically the better route.
FIVE QUESTIONS FOR PARENTS
- Which Coach is better equipped to develop this Player?
- How much meaningful playing time is realistically available?
- Will practices challenge the Player appropriately?
- Is the Player gaining confidence and enjoying Hockey?
- What does the Player want from the season?
WHEN TO RECONSIDER
If the Player rarely participates, loses confidence or stops enjoying Hockey, speak with the Player and Coach about the development plan. Do not make a major decision based on one poor game.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
We considered meaningful game involvement, Coaching quality, competition, age, confidence and the Player’s goals. These factors do not support a universal rule that higher-level Hockey is always better or that more minutes always wins. The right environment is the one offering this Player the best overall development opportunity.
DON’T CHOOSE THE JERSEY LABEL. CHOOSE THE DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY.™

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
