THE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT RESOURCE ANSWER™
Responding After Goals Against can be taught to Minor Hockey Goalies without treating children as miniature professionals. GOALIE COACH GARY™ uses the same subject throughout four development stages, with expectations adjusted to experience, safety, confidence and game demands.
U7–U9: Begin with awareness
After a goal, stand up, find the puck and prepare for another turn without blame.
Age-appropriate practice
Start with a realistic example the Goalie understands. Demonstrate the decision or movement slowly. Have the Player describe what they noticed, practise it in a controlled setting and repeat after one specific coaching cue. For U7–U9, increase difficulty only when the Goalie shows safe control and can explain the purpose of the action.
Checkpoint: Ask what information the Goalie used, what the Player controlled and what the next practice repetition should improve. Correct one habit at a time rather than overwhelming the Player with instructions.
U10–U12: Build a consistent habit
Use a brief reset: breathe, identify the next play and return to the ready position.

U13–U15: Understand the situation
Separate screens, rebounds and defensive breakdowns from controllable decisions during review.

U16–U18: Apply and refine
Use a calm postgame review to find one recurring pattern and an actionable practice objective.

How Coaches and Parents can help
Compare the Goalie’s developing habits with their earlier performance rather than another child’s score or selection status. Confidence comes from useful practice, realistic feedback and opportunities to participate. Build rest and recovery into the development plan, and avoid presenting every goal against as a personal failure.
How to measure improvement
Review whether the Player sees the situation more clearly, demonstrates a better decision and can repeat that choice under gradually increasing pressure. A single successful drill is not mastery. Make the next step practical, observable and appropriately challenging.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
