THE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT RESOURCE ANSWER™
Four-Week Goalie Development Plan develops progressively during Minor Hockey. GOALIE COACH GARY™ teaches the same subject through four age groups while adjusting the expectation to the Player’s readiness and experience.
U7–U9: Build awareness
Start with safe control and a simple cue. For four-week goalie development plan, the Coach should focus on a specific action the Goalie can demonstrate without fear of mistakes.
Practical U7–U9 lesson
Show the Goalie a manageable example. Ask what they see and what response they would choose. Use short controlled repetitions, give one practical cue and repeat. Do not use adult-speed drills or make goals against the measure of success.
U10–U12: Practise consistency
Build a consistent technique before adding shots. For four-week goalie development plan, the Coach should focus on a specific action the Goalie can demonstrate without fear of mistakes.
Practical U10–U12 lesson
Show the Goalie a manageable example. Ask what they see and what response they would choose. Use short controlled repetitions, give one practical cue and repeat. Add a second element only when the first habit is steady.
U13–U15: Read and explain
Compare different play situations and explain adjustments. For four-week goalie development plan, the Coach should focus on a specific action the Goalie can demonstrate without fear of mistakes.
Practical U13–U15 lesson
Show the Goalie a manageable example. Ask what they see and what response they would choose. Use short controlled repetitions, give one practical cue and repeat. Discuss two possible responses, and explain when each is useful.
U16–U18: Execute and review
Measure decisions and execution over several practices. For four-week goalie development plan, the Coach should focus on a specific action the Goalie can demonstrate without fear of mistakes.
Practical U16–U18 lesson
Show the Goalie a manageable example. Ask what they see and what response they would choose. Use short controlled repetitions, give one practical cue and repeat. Add realistic pressure, review performance and select one improvement for the following practice.
How Parents can support progress
Look for growing awareness, balance and confidence instead of judging a Goalie by a single game. Ask what they learned and what they want to practise next. A supportive Team environment, appropriate instruction and recovery matter as much as an impressive performance.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
