GOALIE COACH GARY™: Playing Time and Development Opportunities ALL AGES

THE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT RESOURCE ANSWER™

Playing Time and Development Opportunities must be understood across all four stages of Minor Hockey. GOALIE COACH GARY™ explains how expectations change with age and why each decision should account for the Player’s readiness, enjoyment, opportunities and development.

U7–U9: Build the foundation

At U7–U9, avoid an early permanent starter hierarchy. Offer interested Players fair, supported turns and let enjoyment guide continued participation.

Practical U7–U9 activity

Ask the Goalie and Coach to identify one decision they can make together about playing time and development opportunities. Describe what would count as a successful outcome, then choose one manageable action for the next practice or conversation. Review the result without comparing the Player to another child. Adapt the activity to safety, experience and circumstances.

Checkpoint: Can the Goalie explain the choice, the reason for it and what will be reviewed next? If not, simplify the guidance before adding pressure.

U10–U12: Create consistent habits

At U10–U12, prioritize meaningful repetitions, regular Goalie instruction and a transparent rotation over the prestige of a Team label.

Practical U10–U12 activity

Ask the Goalie and Coach to identify one decision they can make together about playing time and development opportunities. Describe what would count as a successful outcome, then choose one manageable action for the next practice or conversation. Review the result without comparing the Player to another child. Adapt the activity to safety, experience and circumstances.

Checkpoint: Can the Goalie explain the choice, the reason for it and what will be reviewed next? If not, simplify the guidance before adding pressure.

U13–U15: Understand the trade-offs

At U13–U15, ask how practices, game starts and coaching will develop the Player. A higher-level roster may be unsuitable if opportunities are scarce.

U16–U18: Make informed decisions

At U16–U18, review the expected role, starts, development support and contingency plan in writing before committing. Revisit promises during the season.

What Hockey Parents and Coaches should remember

Different Goalies develop at different rates. Labels, isolated statistics and promises of future selection are weaker guides than observable progress, qualified instruction and meaningful opportunity. Make important decisions collaboratively and revisit them when conditions change.

How to measure progress

Record one practical behaviour or decision, review it after several sessions and look for a useful pattern. A single successful game does not establish mastery, and one difficult performance should not decide a Player’s future. Keep goals appropriate to the age and the individual.

GOALIE COACH GARY™ — Takeaway

ONE SUBJECT. FOUR STAGES. AN AGE-APPROPRIATE DECISION.™ The best next step is the one the Goalie can understand and act on now.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
