Young Goalies often believe their job begins when the puck is shot.
It doesn’t.
A Goalie can make a spectacular save after getting caught out of position, but that is not the habit we want to teach. The better lesson is much simpler:
The save starts before the shot.
Before the puck leaves the shooter’s stick, the Goalie has already made several decisions. Where is the puck? Where is the dangerous Player? What is the shooting angle? How deep should I be? Am I square? Am I set?
Those decisions can make the eventual save much easier.
Teach the Goalie What Happens Before the Shot
Goalie development cannot be only about stopping pucks.
Goalies need to learn to:
- skate efficiently into position;
- stay square to the puck;
- control their depth;
- read how the play is developing;
- arrive early enough to get set;
- recognize when the threat changes.
The goal is not to create a young Goalie who reacts faster to every mistake.
The goal is to create a Goalie who makes fewer positional mistakes in the first place.
U7–U9 — Start With Skating and Position
At this age, keep the lesson simple.
Teach the Goalie to move into the puck’s shooting lane before worrying about advanced save techniques.
A young Goalie should begin learning:
PUCK → MOVE → SQUARE → SET
Do not bury a seven-year-old in technical terminology. Make positioning visible and repeatable.
The Coach can move a puck slowly around the zone while the Goalie follows it without shots being taken. The lesson is movement and position, not saves.
Once the Goalie arrives correctly, add the shot.
U10–U12 — Introduce Angle and Depth
Now the Goalie can begin understanding why two Goalies standing in different places face very different shots.
Teach how moving slightly forward can reduce the visible net and how getting too aggressive can create problems if the puck moves laterally.
The Player should begin connecting three ideas:
ANGLE. DEPTH. SET POSITION.
Do not rush the shot. Give the Goalie time to recognize the situation, move correctly and become balanced.
Speed comes later.
U13–U15 — Read the Developing Play
At this stage, positioning becomes less mechanical.
The Goalie should begin asking:
- Where can the puck go next?
- Is the shooter dangerous?
- Is there a passing option?
- Is traffic changing what I can see?
- Do I need to hold my feet rather than drop early?
Now the Goalie is not simply following the puck.
The Goalie is learning to read Hockey.
U16–U18 — Position With Purpose
Older Goalies should understand that positioning is connected to the entire defensive situation.
A Goalie may choose different depth depending on puck location, shooter quality, traffic, passing threats and game situation.
The Coach should increasingly create drills that force decisions rather than predetermined movements.
The question becomes less:
“Did you make the save?”
and more:
“Were you in the best position before the shot?”
Junior / College — Efficiency Matters
At higher levels, shots arrive faster and Players disguise their intentions better.
Goalies cannot depend on reaction alone.
Efficient skating, controlled depth, early reads and arriving set become critical because small positional errors become much more expensive.
The best save may look completely ordinary because the Goalie did the difficult work before the puck was released.
The Common Coaching Mistake
A drill can accidentally reward bad Goaltending.
If the Goalie gets badly out of position, dives across the crease and somehow makes the save, everyone remembers the highlight.
But the Coach should also ask:
Why was the dive necessary?
Celebrate effort, but teach the decision that could have made the save simpler.
GOALIE COACH GARY™ TAKEAWAY
DON’T JUST COACH THE SAVE. COACH WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE IT.™
The shot may last a fraction of a second.
The Goalie’s preparation for that shot started much earlier.
That is Goalie Intelligence™.
15 SECONDS CAN INTRODUCE A SKILL. IT CANNOT TEACH YOU TO MASTER IT.™
WATCH IT → UNDERSTAND IT → PRACTISE IT → DEVELOP IT.™
Use qualified Goalie instruction and proper on-ice practice to turn the lesson into a repeatable skill.
