GOALIE COACH GAIL™: Lateral Movement and Balance by Age — U7–U18

HOCKEY LIFE

THE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT RESOURCE ANSWER™

Lateral Movement and Balance is taught differently at each stage of Minor Hockey. GOALIE COACH GAIL™ explains one subject across four age groups, allowing Coaches and Parents to see how the same foundation develops as experience and game demands grow. The objective is safe learning, informed decisions and steady improvement, not perfection in one practice.

U7–U9: Learn the foundation

Teach safe skating and a stable ready position with slow movements across the crease.

Practical U7–U9 exercise

Introduce the situation at a pace suited to the Player. Ask the Goalie what they see and what action they plan to take. Repeat the sequence three to five times, pausing to discuss one observable behaviour. Once the Player understands the choice and can execute safely, vary the starting position or decision. Do not add complexity merely to make the drill look advanced.

Coach’s checkpoint: Watch the Goalie’s awareness, balance, communication and response after the play. Give one clear cue and compare the next repetition with the previous one.

U10–U12: Build consistency

Practise equal pushes to both sides and a controlled stop before adding shots.

U13–U15: Read the situation

Combine lateral movement with reading the passer; assess where the Goalie arrives rather than speed alone.

U16–U18: Apply under pressure

Practise changing directions under realistic pressure while remaining balanced and available for a second save.

Repeat the sequence three to five times, pausing to discuss one observable behaviour. Once the Player understands the choice and can execute safely, vary the starting position or decision. What Hockey Parents should know

Age and experience determine what is reasonable to expect. A result on the scoreboard does not tell us whether a decision was sound. Encourage purposeful practice, appropriate rest and honest conversations with the Goalie Coach. Avoid comparing children at different stages or turning a single error into a judgment of potential.

What progress looks like

Progress shows when a Goalie can describe the situation, apply a more reliable action and recover constructively when a choice fails. Revisit the subject over several practices and change only one coaching cue at a time. Individual readiness, equipment fit and safety come before intensity.

GOALIE COACH GAIL™ — Key takeaway

ONE SUBJECT. FOUR MINOR HOCKEY STAGES. ONE PRACTICAL NEXT STEP.™ Lateral Movement and Balance is a development pathway from U7–U9 through U16–U18, not a test that every Goalie must pass at the same age.
