4 – GOALIE COACH GAIL™: Pregame Routine and Mental Preparation – All Ages

GOALIE COACH JANE

THE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT RESOURCE ANSWER™

Pregame Routine and Mental Preparation must be understood across all four stages of Minor Hockey. GOALIE COACH GAIL™ explains how expectations change with age and why each decision should account for the Player’s readiness, enjoyment, opportunities and development.

U7–U9: Build the foundation

At U7–U9, keep preparation enjoyable and brief: equipment check, gentle movement and one simple reminder to watch the puck.

Practical U7–U9 activity

Ask the Goalie and Coach to identify one decision they can make together about pregame routine and mental preparation. Describe what would count as a successful outcome, then choose one manageable action for the next practice or conversation. Review the result without comparing the Player to another child. Adapt the activity to safety, experience and circumstances.

Checkpoint: Can the Goalie explain the choice, the reason for it and what will be reviewed next? If not, simplify the guidance before adding pressure.

U10–U12: Create consistent habits

At U10–U12, add a predictable warm-up and one personal focus cue chosen with the Goalie.

Practical U10–U12 activity

Ask the Goalie and Coach to identify one decision they can make together about pregame routine and mental preparation. Describe what would count as a successful outcome, then choose one manageable action for the next practice or conversation. Review the result without comparing the Player to another child. Adapt the activity to safety, experience and circumstances.

Checkpoint: Can the Goalie explain the choice, the reason for it and what will be reviewed next? If not, simplify the guidance before adding pressure.

U13–U15: Understand the trade-offs

At U13–U15, help the Player practise a short physical and mental routine that works even when travel or schedules change.

Practical U13–U15 activity

Ask the Goalie and Coach to identify one decision they can make together about pregame routine and mental preparation. Describe what would count as a successful outcome, then choose one manageable action for the next practice or conversation. Review the result without comparing the Player to another child. Adapt the activity to safety, experience and circumstances.

Checkpoint: Can the Goalie explain the choice, the reason for it and what will be reviewed next? If not, simplify the guidance before adding pressure.

U16–U18: Make informed decisions

At U16–U18, make the routine repeatable but flexible. Note what improves readiness and avoid exhausting the Goalie before games.

Practical U16–U18 activity

Ask the Goalie and Coach to identify one decision they can make together about pregame routine and mental preparation. Describe what would count as a successful outcome, then choose one manageable action for the next practice or conversation. Review the result without comparing the Player to another child. Adapt the activity to safety, experience and circumstances.

What Hockey Parents and Coaches should remember

Different Goalies develop at different rates. Labels, isolated statistics and promises of future selection are weaker guides than observable progress, qualified instruction and meaningful opportunity. Make important decisions collaboratively and revisit them when conditions change.

How to measure progress

Record one practical behaviour or decision, review it after several sessions and look for a useful pattern. A single successful game does not establish mastery, and one difficult performance should not decide a Player’s future. Keep goals appropriate to the age and the individual.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
