LET’S MAKE HOCKEY FUN!
Don’t Just Tell Players What They’re Doing. Tell Them Why.
One of the most common questions young hockey players ask during practice is:
“Why are we doing this?”
Sometimes they ask it out loud.
More often, they simply wonder.
Children enjoy learning more when they understand the purpose behind what they’re are doing.
That is why great coaches don’t simply organize practices.
They explain them.
Every activity should answer two simple questions.
Why are we doing this?
Where will we use it in a game?
Those two questions transform learning.
A passing game is no longer just about passing.
It’s about creating offense before defenders can react.
A small-area game becomes preparation for power plays, penalty kills, and battles around the net.
Stops and starts become recovery after turnovers.
Breakaway practice becomes preparation for tournament shootouts.
Players stop asking:
“What are we doing?”
They begin asking:
“When do I get to use this in a game?”
That excitement changes everything.
At The Hockey Resource, we also believe parents should understand the purpose behind every practice.
Imagine receiving a simple practice plan before players arrive at the rink.
Not just a list of activities.
An explanation.
| Activity | Where You’ll Use It In A Game |
|---|---|
| Cross-Ice Game | Power plays, penalty kills, and small-area battles. |
| Passing Game | Creating offense before defenders arrive. |
| Stops & Starts | Recovering quickly after turnovers. |
| My Signature Move | Breakaways, penalty shots, and tournament shootouts. |
Now parents become part of the learning process.
The drive home becomes different.
Instead of asking:
“Did you have fun?”
They might ask:
“What was your favourite close-area play today?”
Or…
“What was the coolest pass you made today?”
Children love talking about something they understand.
Parents become partners in development.
Coaches build stronger communication.
Players connect practice with game situations.
Everyone benefits.
The best practices don’t simply teach skills.
They teach understanding.
Because understanding builds confidence.
Confidence builds enjoyment.
Enjoyment builds better hockey experiences.
Every activity has a purpose.
Every player deserves to know it.
Because…

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
