Referee-in-Chief Eddie™
Who this lesson helps: Coaches whose games use developing officials.
Coaches supporting referees set a standard their Players can see. A Coach may challenge a decision through permitted procedures while still protecting the dignity of the official. The tone on the bench influences what children consider acceptable.
A Situation You May Recognize
A Coach reacts to a disputed decision with a personal remark. Players begin repeating that language. The issue now extends beyond one call because an adult leader has modeled how to treat someone under pressure.
Coaches supporting referees: Practical Steps
Use the designated spokesperson and appropriate opportunity to request clarification. Keep the question specific. Address Players who direct prohibited comments at officials, and raise development concerns with the association through its process.
Avoid This Common Trap
Do not claim that protecting Players requires personal abuse. Nor should support prevent a legitimate rules question. Make the distinction visible: question the decision professionally and respect the official as a person.
Your Next Development Step
At a Team meeting, explain how the bench will handle disputed calls. Give Players a clear action they can control, such as returning focus to the next shift. Follow your own standard during the next close game.

Coaches set the tone. Ask clear questions through the proper process, then help your Players refocus. You can challenge a decision professionally while showing young officials the respect every person deserves.
Use the Right Rules for Your Assignment
This is original development guidance from The Hockey Resource™. Confirm requirements with your Referee-in-Chief or assignor. Game rules, certification, reporting, and permitted procedures depend on the governing body and competition; the age of an official is separate from the age division of the Players.
For Canadian assignments, use the Hockey Canada officiating resources and your Member’s instructions. For USA Hockey assignments, consult the official rules and casebook. These resources support verification; these lessons do not replace required training.
Continue with Eddie’s Hockey officiating lessons. Bring one question from this lesson to a qualified mentor and agree on one action for your next assignment.
DISAGREE WITH THE CALL. RESPECT THE PERSON.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
