Joey – Keep Your Head Up

Coach Joey™ · 10-Second Hockey Lessons™ – Helps players learn quickly

JOEY – Hockey happens quickly.

JOEY – Players have to skate, control the puck, recognize pressure, find teammates, and decide what to do next, often within a few seconds.

That is why Coach Joey’s first lesson starts with one of the most important habits a young Hockey Player can develop:

KEEP YOUR HEAD UP.

Coach Joey – 10-second lesson is simple:

Keep your head up. See the ice before the puck gets to you. Find your teammates, spot the pressure, and be ready for your next play.

Why Keeping Your Head Up Matters

Joey – Looking up helps a Player understand what is happening around them.

Before receiving the puck, try to identify:

  • Where are my teammates?
  • Where is the pressure coming from?
  • Is there open ice available?
  • What could my next play be?

A Player who begins gathering that information before touching the puck has more time to make a decision.

That can lead to quicker passes, better puck movement, improved awareness, and fewer rushed decisions.

Joey – Look Before You Get the Puck

JOEY – Young Players naturally want to watch the puck.

That is understandable. Puck control takes concentration.

The goal is not to tell developing Players that they should never look down. Instead, Coaches can help Players gradually become comfortable checking the ice around them before and while handling the puck.

A quick look can provide valuable information.

The more often Players practice this habit, the more natural it can become.

JOEY – Coaches Can Reinforce the Habit

This lesson can be incorporated into ordinary Hockey practices.

Encourage Players to:

JOEY – LOOK. RECEIVE. DECIDE.

Coaches can also create drills that require Players to identify a teammate, open space, or pressure before receiving the puck.

The objective is not simply better puck handling.

It is helping Players learn to see the game.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
