GET BACK. HELP DEFEND.™ Backcheck as soon as possession changes because losing the puck does not end your responsibility. Coach Jane™ teaches girls to recover into the play and protect dangerous ice.
Coach Jane™ 10-Second Hockey Lesson™
Presenter script: “Hi, Coach Jane here. Lost the puck? Get back into the play. Skate hard through useful defensive ice, identify the danger, and help your Team defend.”
React When Possession Changes
Young Players often watch the turnover for a moment before responding. Build the habit of recognizing the change immediately and beginning the recovery.
Do not chase blindly. The exact route depends on the Team’s system and where the danger is developing.
Protect Dangerous Ice
In many situations, recovering toward the middle helps reduce direct routes to the net. Coaches should teach the Player how that principle fits their defensive structure.

U5–U7 + U8–U10 — Lose It, Get Back
Teach the first habit simply: when the other Team gets the puck, start skating back into the play.
U11–U14 — Recover to Useful Ice
Learn to recover through a route that helps protect the middle instead of simply following the puck from behind.
U15–U18 + Junior — Identify the Greatest Danger
Read the puck carrier, middle support, weak-side threats, and your Team’s system while recovering.
5 Smart Ways to Backcheck Through the Middle
Backcheck with purpose when possession changes. The job is not simply to skate toward your own end. Good recovery protects dangerous ice, identifies the greatest threat, and helps teammates defend the rush.
1. React Immediately to the Turnover
The first few seconds matter. Turn, move your feet, and get back into the play before the attacking Team has time to organize.
2. Protect the Middle First
In many situations, the most dangerous route is through the middle. Backcheck through useful defensive ice instead of chasing the puck blindly from behind.
3. Find the Most Dangerous Opponent
Look beyond the puck carrier. A middle-lane or weak-side Player may be the bigger threat if nobody is covering her.
4. Communicate While You Recover
Short calls can help teammates sort coverage and prevent two Players from chasing the same attacker.
5. Finish the Defensive Job
Do not stop skating once you reach the zone. Stay connected to the Team’s defensive structure until possession is recovered or the threat is controlled.
Practice Backchecking With Decisions
Use transition drills where possession changes unexpectedly. Reward Players for recovering through useful ice, identifying the most dangerous option, and communicating instead of simply racing back.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
