FEET FIRST. PUCK SECOND.™ Puck Battles are easier when Players arrive with balance, body position, and a plan. Coach Joey™ teaches Players to win access to the puck before reaching for it.

U5-U7 + U8-U10 — Get Close and Stay Balanced

Skate close to the puck, keep your knees bent, and stay balanced before reaching for it.

Why Reaching Usually Loses

A Player reaching from behind has poor balance and limited control. Getting close first lets your legs, hips, and stick work together.

Use Your Feet

Pucks often become trapped near skates. Learn to move the puck with your feet while keeping your stick available.

Know Where Support Is

Before the battle begins, scan for teammates. A quick support pass can be better than trying to beat two defenders alone.

5 Smart Ways to Win Puck Battles in Hockey

Puck Battles are not won by reaching harder. They are usually won by arriving balanced, establishing position, protecting your hands and stick, and knowing what you want to do if you gain possession.

1. Arrive Under Control

Skating into a battle too fast can leave a Player off balance. Close the space quickly, then arrive with knees bent and enough control to adjust to the puck or opponent.

2. Win Body Position First

When the rules and age level allow contact, use legal body position to get between the opponent and the puck. At younger ages, the same principle starts with skating position and balance rather than force.

3. Use Your Feet to Protect the Puck

Strong Puck Battles often involve the skates as much as the stick. A Player can shield the puck, kick it into space, or move it away from pressure before making the next play.

4. Know Where Your Support Is

Winning possession means little if the puck is immediately lost again. Scan before the battle when possible and know whether the safe next play is a support pass, rim, escape, or carry.

5. Exit the Battle With a Decision

Do not celebrate winning the puck. Protect it and make the next useful action. The battle is only valuable if the Team keeps possession or moves the puck to a safer area.

Practice Better Puck Battles

Use controlled one-on-one drills along the boards with a nearby support Player. Reward body position, balance, legal stick work, and the decision after possession is won. The objective is not simply to pin someone to the wall. It is to come away with a playable puck.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
