5 Powerful Ways to Protect the Puck in Hockey

COACH JOEY SAYS: Keeping possession matters.

A Player who protects the puck well can buy more time, create better passing options, and keep the play alive under pressure. Because of that, puck protection is one of the most useful habits a young Hockey Player can develop.

That is today’s Coach Joey™ 10-Second Hockey Lesson:

PROTECT THE PUCK.

Coach Joey’s 10-Second Lesson

“Hey everyone, Coach Joey here. Use your body to protect the puck. Keep the defender away from it, stay strong on your skates, and give yourself time to make the next play.”

COACH JOEY™ — AGE-APPROPRIATE LESSONS

U5-U7 + U8-U10 — Learn the Habit

Put your body between the defender and the puck. Stay balanced and keep your feet moving.

U11-U14 — Create Time and Space

Keep the puck on the protected side, use your body and movement, and keep your head up so you can find the next play.

U15-U18 + Junior — Create an Advantage

Use leverage, skating angle, cutbacks, and puck position to create an advantage. Once the advantage disappears, move the puck instead of protecting it just to keep possession.

ONE LESSON. ONE INSTRUCTION. ONE TAKEAWAY.™

1. Put Your Body Between the Defender and the Puck

Good puck protection starts with body position.

Instead of leaving the puck exposed, Players should try to place their body between the defender and the puck.

That forces the defender to work around the Player before reaching the puck.

As a result, the puck carrier can gain valuable extra time.

2. Stay Strong on Your Skates

Balance matters when pressure arrives.

A Player who remains strong through the legs and core is harder to move off the puck.

For example, bending the knees and keeping a stable stance can help Players absorb contact while maintaining control.

Good skating and puck protection work together.

3. Keep the Puck Away From Pressure

Players should not carry the puck directly toward the defender when they have another option.

Instead, move the puck to the protected side of the body.

Use the stick, hips, shoulders, and skating angle to create separation.

Meanwhile, keep your head up so you can see passing and skating options.

4. Protect the Puck With a Purpose

Puck protection is not about holding the puck forever.

The goal is to create enough time and space to make a better play.

That next play might be:

  • A pass.
  • A shot.
  • A turn away from pressure.
  • A move into open ice.
  • A cycle along the boards.

Therefore, Players should protect the puck while still looking for what comes next.

5. Move Your Feet

Standing still makes a defender’s job easier.

However, moving your feet can force the defender to adjust and can create new space.

Small turns, changes of direction, and quick acceleration can help keep the puck away from pressure.

The best puck protection often combines body position with movement.

Coaches Can Reinforce Puck Protection

Coaches can teach puck protection in simple battle drills and small-area games.

Ask Players to:

Use their body.

Stay balanced.

Keep the puck on the safe side.

Look for the next play.

Most importantly, reward good decisions rather than simply rewarding the Player who holds the puck the longest.

Coach Joey’s Takeaway

PROTECT THE PUCK.

Use your body.

Stay strong on your skates.

Keep the puck away from pressure.

Then make the next play.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
