8 – HOCKEY MOM YVONNE™ — ALL AGES — Your Child Is Exhausted From Hockey

YVONNE Goalie Mom

TIRED PLAYERS DON’T NEED ANOTHER CALENDAR ENTRY.™ Hockey burnout can hide inside a busy schedule until fatigue starts to look normal. Therefore, Hockey Mom Yvonne™ reminds families that development also depends on sleep, recovery, school, and having enough life left to be a child or teenager.

Hockey Burnout - Hockey Mom Yvonne talks with a family about a Player feeling exhausted by Hockey.

Hockey Burnout: HOCKEY MOM YVONNE™ BY AGE

U5-U7 • U8-U10 • U11-U14 • U15-U18 • Junior

U5-U7 + U8-U10 — Hockey Burnout: Protect Energy and Fun

If a young Player is constantly exhausted or reluctant to go, look at the whole schedule before adding another activity.

U11-U14 — Hockey Burnout: Watch the Combination

School, growth, tournaments, practices, other sports, and social life all consume energy.

U15-U18 + Junior — Recovery Is Part of Performance

Older competitive Players may train more, but recovery becomes more important, not less.

Busy Is Not the Same as Productive

A packed calendar can produce poor practices, low energy, irritability, and reduced enjoyment.

Watch for Persistent Patterns

One tired weekend is normal. Repeated fatigue or constant reluctance deserves a closer look at the schedule.

Parents Control More Than They Think

Children may ask for every camp because friends are going. Adults still decide what the family can reasonably support.

5 Signs Hockey Burnout May Be Building

Hockey Burnout can develop slowly when practices, games, school, travel, training, and family obligations keep stacking up. Fatigue is not always a motivation problem.

1. The Player Is Always Tired

Watch for persistent fatigue, trouble waking, irritability, or falling asleep during normal activities. Recovery is part of development, not time stolen from it.

2. Hockey Stops Feeling Like Hockey

If every practice feels like another obligation, the family should pay attention. A temporary rough patch is normal. Months of dread may signal something more.

3. School and Family Life Are Being Squeezed Out

Hockey Burnout can be worsened when there is no room left for sleep, homework, friends, siblings, or downtime.

4. More Training Is Making Performance Worse

Extra sessions do not help if the Player is too tired to learn or recover. Families should look at the entire workload, not one program at a time.

5. The Player Needs a Real Break

A short workload reduction can protect the long-term relationship with the game. Don’t treat rest as failure when the body and mind are asking for it.

Hockey Mom Yvonne’s Takeaway

Sometimes the best development decision is an empty square on the calendar. TIRED PLAYERS DON’T NEED ANOTHER CALENDAR ENTRY.™

Hockey Burnout: Recovery Is Development Too

Hockey burnout can appear as fatigue, irritability, lost motivation, or dread around a schedule that once felt exciting. First, protect sleep and recovery. Then review the calendar, because reducing unnecessary load can support development better than pushing through Hockey burnout.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
