7 – REFEREE-IN-CHIEF™ EDDIE – 5 Strong Ways to Manage Referee Fatigue

EDDIE ONE REF

Referee-in-Chief Eddie™ ·

Who this lesson helps: Officials and assignors managing workload.

Referee fatigue can affect movement and attention, particularly when games combine with travel and other commitments. Workload decisions should consider the person and assignment. A schedule that looks possible on paper may leave too little preparation or recovery.

A Situation You May Recognize

An official accepts consecutive assignments with difficult travel and notices late-game concentration slipping. Hiding the problem may protect appearances briefly, but it prevents the assignor from making a better plan.

Referee fatigue: Practical Steps

Discuss workload honestly, plan appropriate breaks, and prepare food and hydration suitable for your needs. If symptoms or health concerns require professional advice, obtain it. Follow program requirements and communicate when readiness is compromised.

Avoid This Common Trap

Do not assume one fixed game limit is suitable for all officials. Nor should a tired official push through an unsafe situation to prove toughness. The relevant question is whether they can perform the assignment responsibly.

Your Next Development Step

Review a recent busy weekend with the assignor. Identify where fatigue appeared and what could be changed: timing, travel, breaks, or number of assignments. Check the effect of the revised schedule.

A Short Video Script for Eddie

Proposed spoken script for this lesson; the matching video has not yet been recorded.

Fatigue affects more than skating. It can affect attention and decisions. Plan your workload, communicate early, and use appropriate recovery. Being honest about readiness is part of being professional.

Use the Right Rules for Your Assignment

This is original development guidance from The Hockey Resource™. Confirm requirements with your Referee-in-Chief or assignor. Game rules, certification, reporting, and permitted procedures depend on the governing body and competition; the age of an official is separate from the age division of the Players.

For Canadian assignments, use the Hockey Canada officiating resources and your Member’s instructions. For USA Hockey assignments, consult the official rules and casebook. These resources support verification; THR lessons do not replace required training.

Continue with Eddie’s advice for new Hockey referees. Bring one question from this lesson to a qualified mentor and agree on one action for your next assignment.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
