Referee-in-Chief Eddie™ ·
Who this lesson helps: Officials managing changing game rhythm.
Referee concentration can drift during stoppages because the pace briefly slows. Conversations, administration, and the previous play compete for attention. A consistent restart routine helps you reconnect with the responsibilities your system assigns.
A Situation You May Recognize
After explaining a decision, you remain mentally in the conversation as play restarts. Your movement is late. A brief readiness check could have brought your attention back to position, partner coverage, and the developing game.
Referee concentration: Practical Steps
Learn the approved restart procedures and rehearse your responsibilities. After an exchange, use a short cue to refocus. Check your location and crew readiness as needed, then move on to the next sequence.
Avoid This Common Trap
Do not create a personal routine that conflicts with prescribed restart timing or responsibilities. A concentration cue should support the procedures. Also, avoid replaying an argument while assuming the next play will be routine.
Your Next Development Step
Ask a mentor to observe your first moments after several stoppages. Look for delayed movement or missed coverage. Select one simple cue and assess whether it improves readiness.
A Short Video Script for Eddie

A stoppage is not the end of your attention. Finish the required procedure, reset your focus, and be ready for the next play. Do not carry the last conversation into the next decision.
Use the Right Rules for Your Assignment
This is original development guidance from The Hockey Resource™. Confirm requirements with your Referee-in-Chief or assignor. Game rules, certification, reporting, and permitted procedures depend on the governing body and competition; the age of an official is separate from the age division of the Players.
For Canadian assignments, use the Hockey Canada officiating resources and your Member’s instructions. For USA Hockey assignments, consult the official rules and casebook. These resources support verification; THR lessons do not replace required training.
Continue with Eddie’s advice for new Hockey referees. Bring one question from this lesson to a qualified mentor and agree on one action for your next assignment.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience, and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches, and Officials ask and search for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
We commit to providing thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
