7 – REFEREE-IN-CHIEF – EDDIE™ – 5 Smart Ways to Read Play Beyond the Puck

EDDIE ONE REF

Referee-in-Chief Eddie™ ·

Who this lesson helps: Developing officials who want to improve observation.

Referee awareness includes the responsibilities that remain when the puck leaves your immediate area. Watching only the puck can hide relevant interactions. Your officiating system determines coverage, so you must develop wider awareness within that structure.

A Situation You May Recognize

A pass draws your eyes across the rink while contact continues in the area you were responsible for watching. During review, the instructor identifies a coverage gap. The lesson is to connect observation with assigned duties.

Referee awareness: Practical Steps

Review responsibilities with your crew and practice recognizing transitions. Ask an instructor when attention should shift and what must remain covered. Use qualified observation to learn whether your scanning supports the system.

Avoid This Common Trap

Do not interpret awareness as trying to see everything at once. That can dilute attention and duplicate a partner’s work. Also, avoid deciding that an unseen incident occurred because a Player reacts strongly.

Your Next Development Step

During a permitted video review, describe your responsibility before each transition. Ask what information you need and who covers the other action. Compare the answer with the approved mechanics.

A Short Video Script for Eddie

The puck is only part of your assignment. Know your coverage, recognize transitions, and trust the crew’s responsibilities. Better awareness means watching the right things at the right time.

Use the Right Rules for Your Assignment

This is original development guidance from The Hockey Resource™. Confirm requirements with your Referee-in-Chief or assignor. Game rules, certification, reporting, and permitted procedures depend on the governing body and competition; the age of an official is separate from the age division of the Players.

For Canadian assignments, use the Hockey Canada officiating resources and your Member’s instructions. For USA Hockey assignments, consult the official rules and casebook. These resources support verification; THR lessons do not replace required training.

Continue with Eddie’s advice for new Hockey referees. Bring one question from this lesson to a qualified mentor and agree on one action for your next assignment.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
