Referee-in-Chief Eddie™ ·
Who this lesson helps: Officials and administrators who manage assignment payments.
Referee payment should be understandable before an assignment is accepted. Unclear rates, delayed claims, and unexplained deductions create avoidable frustration. Officials need accurate information and a clear way to correct errors.
A Situation You May Recognize
A beginner receives a payment that differs from what they expected. They don’t know whether the rate, travel allowance, or submission method changed. A written payment process would make it easier to resolve the question.
Referee payment: Practical Steps
Confirm the approved rate, eligible expenses, submission method, and expected payment schedule. Keep appropriate records of assignments. Ask the designated administrator about discrepancies using the relevant dates and amounts.
Avoid This Common Trap
Do not assume every league pays identically or promise a particular employment or tax treatment. Those questions depend on the arrangement and jurisdiction. Avoid sharing banking information through an informal public message.
Your Next Development Step
Before the next payment cycle, check one completed assignment against the published process. If there is an error, report the specific difference. Administrators should review whether beginners can find these instructions easily.

Know the rate and payment process before you work. Keep assignment records and ask specific questions about differences. Clear administration helps officials focus their attention on the game.
Use the Right Rules for Your Assignment
This is original development guidance from The Hockey Resource™. Confirm requirements with your Referee-in-Chief or assignor. Game rules, certification, reporting, and permitted procedures depend on the governing body and competition; the age of an official is separate from the age division of the Players.
For Canadian assignments, use the Hockey Canada officiating resources and your Member’s instructions. For USA Hockey assignments, consult the official rules and casebook. These resources support verification; THR lessons do not replace required training.
Continue with Eddie’s advice for new Hockey referees. Bring one question from this lesson to a qualified mentor and agree on one action for your next assignment.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
We commit to providing thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
