7 – REFEREE-IN-CHIEF – EDDIE™ – 5 Smart Ways to Match Referees With Assignments

EDDIE SPEAKING

Referee-in-Chief Eddie™ ·

Who this lesson helps: Assignors and Referees-in-Chief.

Referee assignments should match the official’s qualifications, current ability, and available support to the actual game. Age labels and years registered are useful context, but they do not prove readiness. Assigning should be a development decision as well as a scheduling task.

A Situation You May Recognize

A scheduling gap appears in a demanding game. The easiest available official is a beginner. Filling the box may solve today’s administration while creating an unsuitable learning environment for the official and Teams.

Referee assignments: Practical Steps

Verify eligibility, review recent evaluations, consider the game’s demands, and identify crew support. Ask the official about readiness concerns. When necessary, change the assignment plan rather than treating availability as qualification.

Avoid This Common Trap

Do not promise that a veteran partner makes every difficult assignment suitable. The beginner still has real responsibilities. Also, avoid permanently withholding development opportunities without explaining what readiness criteria must be met.

Your Next Development Step

Review several recent assignments against qualification and observed skills. Identify where progression was supported and where an official was simply available. Build an action plan for any repeated mismatch.

The right assignment matches qualification, ability, and support to the game. Availability alone is not readiness. Give developing officials a clear next step and explain what they need to show.

Use the Right Rules for Your Assignment

This is original development guidance from The Hockey Resource™. Confirm requirements with your Referee-in-Chief or assignor. Game rules, certification, reporting, and permitted procedures depend on the governing body and competition; the age of an official is separate from the age division of the Players.

For Canadian assignments, use the Hockey Canada officiating resources and your Member’s instructions. For USA Hockey assignments, consult the official rules and casebook. These resources support verification; THR lessons do not replace required training.

Continue with Eddie’s advice for new Hockey referees. Bring one question from this lesson to a qualified mentor and agree on one action for your next assignment.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

We commit to providing thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
