REFEREE-IN-CHIEF EDDIE™ – 5 Smart Ways to Ask an Official About a Call

EDDIE TALKING TO PARENTS

Referee-in-Chief Eddie™

Who this lesson helps: Coaches requesting an explanation.

Coach-referee communication works best when the request is short and timed appropriately. An explanation should help establish what was called or how a rule applies. It should not become an attempt to win a prolonged argument.

A Situation You May Recognize

A Coach begins with several unrelated complaints, then asks about the current decision. The official cannot easily identify the question. Reducing the exchange to one specific issue improves the chance of a useful answer.

Coach referee communication: Practical Steps

Follow the competition’s communication procedure. Identify the particular decision, ask one question, and listen to the explanation. If you believe a rules issue remains, use the prescribed process rather than inventing an appeal at the bench.

Avoid This Common Trap

Avoid disguising an insult as a question. Conversely, officials should not assume every request is abuse. Both parties benefit when clarification stays focused on the decision and the applicable procedure.

Your Next Development Step

Practice asking for a decision’s explanation without adding a judgment about competence. Ask a colleague whether the wording is clear. Then review your own tone after a pressured game, when habits are most visible.

Ask one clear question at the right time. Listen to the answer and use the proper process if a concern remains. The goal is understanding the decision, while keeping the game moving.

Use the Right Rules for Your Assignment

This is original development guidance from The Hockey Resource™. Confirm requirements with your Referee-in-Chief or assignor. Game rules, certification, reporting, and permitted procedures depend on the governing body and competition; the age of an official is separate from the age division of the Players.

For Canadian assignments, use the Hockey Canada officiating resources and your Member’s instructions. For USA Hockey assignments, consult the official rules and casebook. These resources support verification; THTR lessons do not replace required training.

Continue with Eddie’s advice for new Hockey referees. Bring one question from this lesson to a qualified mentor and agree on one action for your next assignment.

DISAGREE WITH THE CALL. RESPECT THE PERSON.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
