GOALIE COACH GARY™ — U16–U18: Prepare for the Backup Role

COACH GARY

THE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT RESOURCE ANSWER™

Prepare for the Backup Role. Goalie Coach Gary™ approaches this U16–U18 lesson with one standard: teach a decision or habit that a Player can demonstrate, rather than asking the Player to copy the appearance of an elite Goalie. The right progression depends on experience, physical readiness and confidence.

What the Goalie needs to understand

A backup role can teach valuable habits, but it becomes a problem when a Player receives neither purposeful practice nor a credible path to starts.

Begin by identifying what the Goalie sees and what choice the situation requires. A Coach who can explain the purpose of a movement will develop more durable understanding than one who simply demands faster repetition.

A practical Hockey drill

Ask the Head Coach and Goalie Coach to define practice work, expected opportunities and review dates. Put the discussion in ordinary, respectful language.

Ask the Goalie what changed between the first and final repetitions. Repeat the exercise slowly enough for the Player to notice a difference, then add realistic pressure only when the action stays controlled. Coaches should adjust repetitions to fatigue and experience.

Advice for Hockey Parents and Coaches

Do not accept vague promises indefinitely. Reassess whether the situation serves development if agreed opportunities do not materialize.

Keep feedback specific to an observable action. Replace ‘you have to be better’ with a question such as ‘what did you see?’ or a clear instruction about the next repetition. The Goalie deserves room to learn without fearing every mistake.

How to tell whether this lesson worked

Look for improved awareness, a more balanced choice, or a clearer explanation from the Goalie. One successful drill does not prove mastery, and one difficult practice does not erase progress. Revisit the same situation in the following week and compare the decisions.

Coach Gary’s takeaway

Prepare for the Backup Role: Make the next practice action simple, measurable and appropriate for U16–U18. Development comes from understanding, repetition, useful feedback and opportunities to play.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
