GOALIE COACH GARY™: Rebound Control by ALL Ages

COACH GARY

THE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT RESOURCE ANSWER™

Rebound Control is a skill that develops throughout Minor Hockey. A Goalie does not control every rebound. The immediate goal is to locate the puck, respond safely, and learn when to cover it or direct it away from dangerous areas. Goalie Coach Gary™ teaches this subject through four progressive age groups, not a one-size-fits-all technique.

U7–U9: Find the puck first

Young Goalies are learning how shots feel, how to keep their balance and how to follow a puck after contact. Do not demand that each shot be directed to a corner. Begin with safe, slow shots from a manageable distance and allow the child to stop, look and find the puck after each attempt.

Practice: Five shots and a pause

Take five gentle shots. After each contact, pause and ask, “Where did the puck go?” Encourage the Goalie to point or turn toward it. Praise tracking, courage and willingness to try another repetition, even if a puck enters the net.

U10–U12: Choose between cover, steer and recover

As puck awareness improves, introduce intentional decisions. A loose puck within safe reach may be covered. A controlled low shot may be steered toward less dangerous space. When the rebound escapes, the Goalie should locate it, return to a balanced position and prepare for the next play.

Practice: Two different rebound outcomes

Alternate a shot that can be safely covered with a low shot directed toward a side. Ask the Goalie to explain the intended response before the shot. Add a second shooter only after the first decision is repeatable.

U13–U15: Connect rebound direction with the next threat

At this stage the Player should recognize that directing a rebound away from one attacker can still put it near another. Review the shooting angle, open space, traffic and second-shot threat. Rebound control becomes a combination of technique and reading the play.

Practice: First save, read, second decision

Set one shooter and a second Player in a visible, controlled position. After the first shot, the Goalie tracks the rebound and makes a deliberate second response. Freeze the play when necessary to discuss whether the puck was covered, redirected or exposed.

U16–U18: Execute under realistic pressure

Older Minor Hockey Goalies must make quick decisions when shooters create screens, tips and rebound chances. Build situational repetitions that resemble games, including recovering from imperfect first saves. Emphasize efficient movement and tracking over spectacular reactions.

Practice: Three-second recovery window

Use a controlled first shot followed by a possible second opportunity. Assess puck location, body balance and whether the next decision protects the most dangerous space. Review short video clips when available, choosing one specific improvement for the next session.

What Parents and Coaches should measure

Compare the Goalie with their own previous habits, not with another Player’s save percentage. At every age, note whether they locate the puck sooner, recover more calmly and explain their decisions more clearly. Provide short feedback and a realistic next practice goal.

Goalie Coach Gary™: One takeaway

MAKE THE NEXT SAVE POSSIBLE.™ Rebound control is not only what happens on contact. It is also what the Goalie sees and does immediately afterward. Teach the skill progressively from U7–U9 to U16–U18, and keep every drill safe and age-appropriate.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™

At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.

Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.

OUR RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
  2. WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
  3. WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
  4. WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
  5. WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.

We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.

Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
