Stopping both ways is an essential Hockey skill. However, learning to stop in only one direction leaves a Player with fewer options.
Coach Jane™ encourages young Players to practice stopping both ways. The goal is to build control and confidence on either side.
Why Hockey Players Need to Stop Both Ways
The puck will not always travel toward your favorite side. Likewise, an opponent can change direction before you are ready.
Practicing both stops helps you respond to the play instead of turning around to use your stronger side. As a result, you can get into position more efficiently.
For young Players, the first objective is simple: learn to slow down and stop with control.
1. Start Slowly
Begin at a comfortable speed in a clear practice area.
Although stopping quickly may look exciting, control comes first. Your Coach can help you choose the right starting exercise for your ability.
2. Keep Your Knees Bent
Bend your knees and keep your body balanced over your skates.
A stiff, upright position makes it harder to manage your edges. Instead, stay relaxed and ready to move.
3. Practice Each Direction
After practicing one direction, work on the other.
Your weaker side will probably feel awkward at first. That is a reason to practice it—not a reason to avoid it.
Ask your Coach to check your technique before adding speed.
4. Build Speed Gradually
Once you can stop with control in both directions, increase your speed a little at a time.
If you begin losing balance, slow down and reset. A controlled stop at a lower speed gives you a better foundation for the next step.
5. Use Both Stops in Hockey Activities
Next, practice stopping at a marker, beside a puck, or at the end of a simple skating drill.
Alternate directions so your favorite side does not do all the work. Over time, your Coach can introduce situations where you choose the stop that fits the play.
A Reminder for Parents
Encourage effort while your child learns the less comfortable direction.
One side may improve faster than the other. Therefore, praise progress and let the Coach guide the instruction.
“Your balance looked better that time” is more useful than “Why can’t you do it?”

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
