CLOSE SPACE. STAY IN CONTROL.™ Close the Gap without giving the attacker an easy lane around you. Coach Joey™ teaches defenders to control space with skating, timing, and body position.

U5-U7 + U8-U10 — Stay Close Enough to Help
Skate with the attacker instead of stopping far away. Stay between the puck carrier and your net.
U11-U14 — Match Speed and Space
Adjust your gap as the attacker speeds up or slows down. Keep your feet moving so you can respond instead of reaching.
U15-U18 + Junior — Close Before the Dangerous Area
Read the attacker’s speed, support, handedness, and options. Reduce space before the Player reaches a dangerous shooting or passing area without over-committing.
Why Gap Control Matters
Too much space gives an attacker time to build speed, choose a lane, and make a clean play. However, closing recklessly can allow the attacker to skate around the defender. The goal is controlled pressure.
Keep Your Feet Alive
A defender who stops moving often becomes vulnerable. Continue skating, adjust your angle, and avoid relying on a long reach. Meanwhile, keep your stick in a useful lane.
Read the Situation
The correct gap depends on speed, support, location, and level. For example, an attacker with no support can be defended differently from a rush with multiple passing options.
5 Smart Ways to Close the Gap in Hockey
Close the Gap by reducing space while keeping enough balance to respond. Too much room gives the attacker options. Too little control makes the defender easy to beat.
1. Protect the Middle
Start from a position that discourages the puck carrier from attacking the most dangerous ice. Give away the less dangerous route first.
2. Match the Attacker’s Speed
Skate with enough speed to keep the gap from growing, but avoid charging so aggressively that one change of pace creates separation.
3. Keep Your Feet Alive
Defenders who stop moving become vulnerable. Use small adjustments, crossovers, or transitions so you can continue controlling distance.
4. Use Your Stick Without Reaching
Your stick can remove a lane and pressure the puck. When you Close the Gap, avoid reaching so far that your feet and balance disappear.
5. Close at the Right Moment
Pressure becomes safer when the attacker loses speed, runs out of space, looks down, or exposes the puck. Control the route first, then attack the opportunity.
Practice Gap Control in Real Routes
Use one-on-one rushes with enough space for the defender to manage distance. Reward the defender for protecting the middle, matching speed, and closing under control instead of simply winning the puck.

HOW WE REACHED THE HOCKEY ANSWER™
At The Hockey Tournament Resource™, we believe Hockey families, Players, Coaches and Officials deserve more than opinions. They deserve answers supported by research, experience and practical understanding of the game.
Every question begins with something Hockey people genuinely want to know.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
- WE FIND REAL QUESTIONS. We investigate what Hockey Players, Parents, Coaches and Officials are asking and searching for.
- WE SEARCH THE WORLD FOR ANSWERS. We examine relevant Hockey knowledge, coaching practices, available research and expert perspectives from around the world.
- WE COMPARE THE EVIDENCE. We look beyond individual opinions, consider different approaches and identify where the strongest available evidence points.
- WE APPLY REAL HOCKEY EXPERIENCE. We consider how the findings apply to actual Hockey situations, including different ages, skill levels and stages of development.
- WE DELIVER A PRACTICAL ANSWER. We explain what our research suggests, why it matters and what Hockey people can do with that information.
We recognize that not every Hockey question has one perfect answer. Age, ability, experience and individual circumstances can change what works best.
Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, practical answers while being clear about what the evidence supports and where uncertainty remains.
