REAL QUESTIONS. REAL RESEARCH. REAL ANSWERS.™
A current parent discussion in Ontario asked almost exactly this question for a U10 Player choosing between AA and AAA, including concern about cost.
Another recent discussion asked essentially the same thing about choosing A versus AA for a young Player. So this is very much a real question being asked now, not something we invented to fill a category. Reddit
SHOULD MY CHILD PLAY AAA OR AA?
REAL QUESTIONS. REAL RESEARCH. REAL ANSWERS.™
Parents are asking this question right now.
A recent Ontario parent with a U10 Player was weighing offers from both AA and AAA Coaches while also trying to understand the cost and commitment involved.
That makes this more than a question about Team level.
It is a development decision.
THE ANSWER
Choose the environment where your child is most likely to develop, play meaningful minutes, get proper coaching, and keep enjoying Hockey. The higher level isn’t automatically the best development choice.
AAA sounds better than AA.
That alone can influence a family before anyone asks the more important questions.
What kind of Coach will your child have?
How much meaningful ice time will they receive?
Will mistakes be treated as part of learning?
Does the Player fit the pace of the Team?
Will confidence grow or shrink?
Can your family reasonably manage the cost and travel?
Most importantly, does your child actually want the additional commitment?
Letters identify a competitive level. They do not automatically identify the best development environment.
Hockey Canada places strong emphasis on development during the younger age groups.
WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH TELL US?
At U9, Hockey Canada recommends 75% of practice time for skill development and only 25% for tactics.
By U11, Hockey Canada recommends that 85% of practice time go toward skills and tactics, leaving only 15% for Team play, Strategy, and systems.
Fair participation matters too. Hockey Canada states that U11 Players should receive as close to equal ice time as possible and specifically says shortening the bench to win games is not permitted.
Development, self-confidence, and fun remain central goals for nine- and 10-year-old Players.
That leads to an important THR principle:
THE YOUNGER THE Player, THE LESS THE LETTER SHOULD CONTROL THE DECISION.
Competitive level becomes more important as Players get older.
Even then, level is only one factor.
THE ANSWER BY AGE
U5–U7: DO NOT CHASE THE LETTER
At this age, focus on:
Skating. Movement. Puck touches. Confidence. Fun.
Young children do not need Hockey résumés.
They need opportunities to learn.
A program with better teaching, more involvement, and a happier environment should always beat a higher label.
THE ANSWER FOR U5–U7
Choose the best learning environment, not the highest Team designation.
U8–U10: DEVELOPMENT SHOULD STILL WIN
Competitive levels become much more visible here.
Parents begin hearing AAA, AA, A, Select, Rep, and Elite.
That alphabet can create pressure to keep climbing.
Development still has to come first.
HockeyCanada’s current U9 guidance puts 75% of practice time into skills, while its U11 pathway emphasizes progressive practice, meaningful repetitions, and confidence.
Ask:
Who is Coaching?
How well do they teach?
How much will my child play?
Will my child handle the pace?
How often will they touch the puck?
Will they be allowed to make mistakes as they learn?
A major role on a strong AA Team can sometimes produce more development than a tiny role on a AAA Team.
THE ANSWER FOR U8–U10
Choose the environment that gives your child the strongest combination of Coaching, repetitions, confidence and meaningful participation.
U11–U14: COMPETITION STARTS TO MATTER MORE
Better competition can accelerate development.
Faster opponents demand quicker decisions.
Higher-paced practices expose weaknesses.
Stronger teammates can raise standards.
Still, challenge only helps when the Player remains involved.
Ask whether your child can:
keep up with practice pace
handle the puck under pressure
earn meaningful minutes
make decisions instead of simply surviving
maintain enough confidence to keep trying things
Being one of the stronger Players at AA can provide responsibility.
Playing AAA can expose a Player to higher speed and stronger competition.
Either environment can work.
THE ANSWER FOR U11–U14
Choose the highest level where the Player can still contribute, develop, and gain confidence.
U15–U18: ROLE BECOMES CRITICAL
Now competitive level matters considerably more.
Players may be thinking about:
Junior Hockey
College
scouting
special teams
showcases
advancement
At this stage, another question becomes just as important:
WHAT ROLE WILL THE Player ACTUALLY HAVE?
Practicing against stronger Players has value.
Competing at higher speed has value.
Meaningful game repetitions have value too.
A Player who gets important minutes, special-teams opportunities, and Coach trust at AA may sometimes gain more than a Player who gets very limited minutes at AAA.
That does not make AA automatically better.
It means the decision has matured.
THE ANSWER FOR U15–U18
Choose the highest competitive environment where the Player has a legitimate role and a real opportunity to improve.
JUNIOR: FOLLOW THE OPPORTUNITY
At Junior, stop obsessing over labels and evaluate the pathway.
Look closely at:
Role
Ice time
Coach trust
special teams
development
league strength
advancement history
College opportunity
Players ahead of you
A backup who barely plays may benefit more from starting elsewhere.
A depth Player might still gain from stronger daily practices.
No single rule works for every Player.
THE ANSWER FOR JUNIOR
Choose the opportunity that moves the Player forward.
THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION TO ASK THE COACH
Before committing to either Team, ask:
“WHAT ROLE DO YOU SEE MY CHILD PLAYING ON THIS Team?”
Then get specific.
Where do you see my child in the lineup?
How many Players will you carry?
How do you handle ice time?
What development areas do you see?
How will you work on those areas?
Will my child receive special-teams opportunities?
How do you handle mistakes?
“We really like your child” sounds pleasant.
It is not a development plan.
WHAT CAN CHANGE THE ANSWER?
AAA may make more sense when:
- Coaching quality is strong.
- Your child can genuinely compete at that pace.
- A meaningful role is available.
- The Player wants the added commitment.
- Family cost and travel are manageable.
- Stronger competition will stretch the Player without overwhelming them.
AA may make more sense when:
- Coaching is better.
- Playing time will be significantly greater.
- Your child will receive more responsibility.
- Confidence needs rebuilding.
- The AAA role would be extremely limited.
- Added cost and travel would create unnecessary pressure on the family.
A September 2026 Ontario parent discussion showed how real those tradeoffs are. One U10 family was comparing AA and AAA offers while worrying that higher-level Hockey could push annual costs far beyond what the household could reasonably afford.
Cost does not determine development on its own.
Ignoring cost is not intelligent either.
WHAT SHOULD THE PARENT DO?
Compare the environments, not just the letters.
Rate each Team honestly on:
Coach quality
Playing opportunity
Practice quality
Player role
Development plan
Competition
Confidence
Enjoyment
Cost
Travel
Family impact
Then finish with one question:
WHERE IS MY CHILD MOST LIKELY TO BE A BETTER Hockey Player ONE YEAR FROM NOW?
That matters more than which sweater looks better today.
THE TAKEAWAY
THE BEST LEVEL IS THE LEVEL WHERE YOUR CHILD CAN BE CHALLENGED WITHOUT DISAPPEARING.
AAA can be right.
AA can be right.
Better development comes from matching the Player with the right combination of Coaching, challenge, role, opportunity, and confidence.
Do not choose the letters.
Choose the development opportunity. YOUR CHILD CAN BE CHALLENGED WITHOUT DISAPPEARING.
