Player Positive™
Almost every hockey player has experienced it.
The moment they walk into a dressing room and wonder if they belong.

It might happen during a tryout.
It might happen on a new team.
It might happen when moving to a higher level.
It might happen during a tournament surrounded by players they have never met before.
The feeling is surprisingly common.
Players look around the room.
They notice who is bigger.
Who is faster.
Who scored more goals last season.
Who seems more confident.
Who already knows each other.
And somewhere in the middle of those observations, a small voice appears.
“Maybe I’m not good enough.”
“Maybe I shouldn’t be here.”
“Maybe everyone else belongs and I don’t.”
That voice is called doubt.
And nearly every player hears it at some point.
What many young players don’t realize is that the players around them are often having similar thoughts.
Confidence is one of the most misunderstood parts of sports.
People often assume confident players never feel nervous.
Never feel uncertain.
Never question themselves.
The truth is very different.
Most confident players have experienced doubt.
The difference is they learned how to keep moving forward despite it.
Every player who makes a team has earned the opportunity to be there.
Every player who reaches a new level belongs in that environment.
Every player who receives an opportunity deserves the chance to prove themselves.
Yet self-doubt has a way of making people forget that.
Hockey can be intimidating.
The game is fast.
Mistakes are visible.
Evaluation never seems to stop.
Players constantly compare themselves to others.
The comparison game can become exhausting.
One player has a harder shot.
Another skates faster.
Another scores more goals.
Another receives more attention.
If players focus only on comparison, they will always find someone who appears better.
The problem is that comparison often hides the full story.
Players see strengths.
They rarely see struggles.
They see success.
They rarely see setbacks.
They see confidence.
They rarely see the years spent building it.
Every player’s journey is different.
Some develop early.
Some develop later.
Some arrive with confidence.
Some build confidence through experience.
None of those paths are wrong.
The goal is not to become someone else.
The goal is to become the best version of yourself.
The moment you stop worrying about whether you belong is often the moment you start playing your best hockey.
You stop trying to prove yourself.
You start trusting yourself.
You stop comparing.
You start competing.
You stop worrying about fitting in.
You start contributing.
Every player has strengths.
Every player has something to offer.
Every player has a place in the game.
And every player deserves the opportunity to grow.
The next time doubt appears, remember something important.
You earned your opportunity.
You earned your place.
You earned the chance to be there.
Do not let doubt convince you otherwise.
Because you belong here.
